The hardest breakup

When you think of a breakup, you immediately associate this term with pain and sadness, often with loneliness. But what if I told you that there is a breakup that comes with awareness, relief and the greatest gift: Time? I am talking about the breakup with your phone, probably the toughest one to experience nowadays. And most of you will deny their addiction, saying that: Oh, of course I can live without my phone. But you probably checked it last time 5 minutes ago.

I am not here to judge you, but to make you aware of the time you are wasting once you choose to stare at that screen for hours. In fact, it’s not even a choice anymore. It’s a habit. When we reach for our phones, in order to check ,,what’s new”, we just look for a quick satisfaction that makes us forget about what is happening around us. Fast food, drugs and alcohol work in the same way. It’s quite funny how we can be so absorbed by a small device, paying all our attention to it as if nothing around us exists.

But just showing you the negative effects that our phones have is pointless. So instead of trying to convince you that this is a bad habit, I will try to make you realize what you miss. Just answer the following questions sincerely:

  • When was the last time you hung out with your friends/family/lover and you didn’t check your phone?
  • When was the last time you did something fun without posting about it and showing it to the world?
  • When was the last time you actually enjoyed a moment without Snapchatting it?
  • When was the last time you ate a delicious meal without sharing it on your Instagram story?
  • When was the last time you went on holiday without checking in on Facebook?

Ideas like “share it, so your friends can see it too” started as an innovative concept and turned into making us become someone we are not. In order to make others think that our lives are perfect and we are living it fully, we are trapped in a stupid race. We are trying to copy each other, gradually losing our individuality and sense of uniqueness, to be as glamorous as possible and share our happiness with people who don’t even care about us. What a waste of time, right?

We miss the whole point of our existence in this way. We’ve become shallow and impatient and that’s why we need to slow down and ask ourselves: Is it worth it? And if the answer is no, start by being present and dedicate your time to the things and people that actually matter. Keep that joy to yourself and you will see that the satisfaction is double. Nothing happens if no one knows what you did this weekend, what you had for breakfast or what outfit you chose to wear.

But as every habit needs time to be broken, try to be patient and trust the process. I will highly suggest installing an app that tracks your time usage firstly. You may be terrified by how many hours you actually spend on your phone, but with awareness comes understanding as well. Then you should detox your phone by deleting all the unnecessary apps, even social media. But if you still want to use those platforms, at least make sure that you unfollow the people that don’t inspire you, that you have no connection with or simply you don’t even know. It might be hard and people might get upset, but it’s your time and you decide how to spend it.

Don’t get me wrong. I am not suggesting you to throw your phone and never touch it again. Instead, I am trying to make you improve your relationship with it and the time spent on it, to be an useful one. Our phones can be really beneficial if they are used in a conscious way and we don’t lose track of time. So here is my challenge for you. Turn your phone off for one day. Just one day. Come on, it’s not air, you can survive without it. You will see the difference on your own.

Take this as a wake-up call. So bring your awareness back because the beauty in this world, our friends, lovers and family worth it. They need your full presence and that’s the biggest gift you can offer them. I can only wish you good luck in your 24 hours! Try to think of some activities to fill your time with, because you will have plenty!:) Here is where your freedom starts. Enjoy it!

  1. This is so true! I do have a rule of not checking my phone when I’m catching up with friends though! Although I find it hard not to be on my phone a lot being a blogger! It’s tricky isn’t it!

    1. I also don’t check my phone in the morning till I am not done with my ritual (exercise, meditate, etc) as I find it the only peaceful moment of the day. As a blogger though you have a lot of things to catch up with, but the community you are building and the people you get to talk to are definitely worthing our time!
